- In 1986 Steve Helms had three crews consisting of 12 workers. They did work for companies such as Jim Thomason Construction Company, Eric McComb, Al Carter Construction and Farmbrook Properties.
- In 1986, Steve applied for a Residential Contractor’s License and received a Limited Residential License.
- In 1988, Helms Builders was Incorporated.
- In 1990, Helms Builders had the opportunity to build in Carriage Downs and completed 10 homes.
- In 1992, Helms Builders’ focus was general contracting rather than sub-contracting, so work crews were disbanded. At this time, they did custom and spot-lot building.
- In 1993, Helms Builders was accepted into Radbourne and completed 18 homes.
- In 1994, Helms Builders was named Sales Leader of the Year in Radbourne for the most homes built that year.
- In 1993, Helms Builders became a member of the Cabarrus County Homebuilders Association. They were named Builder of the Year in 1994. Steve served as Vice-President of the Association in 1996 and 1997 and then as President in 1998.
- In 1995, Helms Builders began building in River Run and completed 9 homes.
- In 1996, Helms Builders began building in Kings Crossing and completed 15 homes.
- In 1997, Helms Builders completed 16 homes and had a volume of $6.1 million.
- In 1998, Helms Builders began building in Overlook and completed 16 homes.
- In 2002, Helms Builders began building in StoneWater and completed 30 homes.
- In 2005, Helms Builders began building in Abbington and completed 8 homes.
- In 2006, Helms Builders we started building in The Farms and completed 4 homes.
- In 2007-2010, Helms Builders did numerous on-site additions, new homes, and up-fits.
- In 2010, Helms Builders was accepted to represent Star Building Systems (metal buildings).
- In 2010, Helms Builders increased their NC Building License to unlimited Commercial.
- 1n 2010-2012, Helms Builders built 2 homes on Lake Norman, gutted and up-fitted the old Mt. Holly, NC police department (+-(+-) 5000 sq. ft. and built a warehouse for Stanton Properties. They also completed a roof repair for Camp Harris (Charlotte YMCA camp), and built (+-) 5000 sq. ft. pool house on Mt. Island Lake.
- In 2012-2015, Helms Builders completed various commercial & residential renovations.
- In 2015-2017, Helms Builders completed 5 custom homes, and various renovations & commercial projects.
- 2018-2021, Helms Builders completed 35 custom homes, as well as the following commercial construction projects: Allen Storage Center, First Baptist Locust – Family Life Center, Park in City of Locust, Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland Fire Department
